Men’s Voices

Men's Voices is a cornerstone of Essentially Man (EM) — a collection of interviews and long-form profiles documenting the lives, experiences and perspectives of individual men. The men come from different countries, cultures and circumstances, and their experiences do not need to fit a single idea of masculinity.

What It Means to Be a Man: This series meets men from different parts of the world and documents their lives in their own words. Through interviews and profiles, they talk about work, relationships, family, identity, culture and whatever else matters in their lives. Their perspectives may overlap, differ or contradict one another. Together, they offer a broad view of the many different ways men live and experience the world.

Men's Stories: These are longer accounts of individual men and experiences that have shaped their lives. Some involve adversity or significant change; others centre on relationships, friendship, work or particular periods in a man's life. The story comes from the man and what he has experienced, rather than a predetermined lesson about masculinity, resilience or personal growth.

Men & Tradition: This series documents traditions, rituals and cultural practices through the experiences and perspectives of the men who live them. From initiation and ceremony to work, belief and community life, the focus is on the practices themselves and the experiences of the individual men involved. The series spans different cultures and communities without assuming that one man can speak for an entire people or tradition.

Men's Voices is ultimately about listening to men and documenting what they have to say. There is no single answer to what it means to be a man and the project does not need to find one.
